I would imagine that fish was not evenly illuminated is because of the uneven surface of the water. the peaks and troughs of the water surface reflect/transmit the light differently at different locations. its like an array of connected lense....

Hi! I immediately thought of the patterns you are referring to here when I saw the New York Times front picture today. Links here and here (click richard barnes on the top-right corner).

I think I know how to explain the "underwater" patterns; let me know if you think some of these bird patterns have anything to do with that explanation, or if my mind is just warped :)
