Amplitudes in seismology
Waves are surprising. Light waves, sound waves, water waves. In daily life I see some puzzling features of waves that make suggestions to seismologists. Inspect the pictures in the side bar and let us know what you think?

I would imagine that fish was not evenly illuminated is because of the uneven surface of the water. the peaks and troughs of the water surface reflect/transmit the light differently at different locations. its like an array of connected lense....
Hi! I immediately thought of the patterns you are referring to here when I saw the New York Times front picture today. Links here and here (click richard barnes on the top-right corner).
I think I know how to explain the "underwater" patterns; let me know if you think some of these bird patterns have anything to do with that explanation, or if my mind is just warped :)
My guess (without thinking) is they are "caustics".
